Speed camera doubts
Editorial From: Herald Sun September 13, 2010 12:01AM
MOST motorists accept getting booked by speed cameras when they are legitimately caught doing the wrong thing.
But they object to being snapped doing just a few kilometres over the limit, and they particularly object if there is any suggestion the speed camera that nabbed them is inaccurate.
There have long been suggestions the controversial EastLink cameras are not working properly.
That suggestion has been strengthened by documents seen by the Herald Sun. Those documents reveal the EastLink cameras have been plagued with a litany of faults, corrupt data and damaged hardware.
The documents raise serious doubts about the accuracy of the cameras.
Police and government officials keep insisting there is nothing wrong and that every fine issued is a legitimate one.
That's despite admissions one dud camera was replaced and that workers were called out at least 15 times in four months to deal with other camera problems.
It's time serious consideration was given to turning off the EastLink cameras until the State Government can prove they are working correctly.
